What is Forest School?
Forest School is a long-term, child-led approach to learning that takes place outdoors. Through regular time in nature, children build confidence, resilience, independence and a lifelong connection with the natural world.
By returning to the same woodland each week, children develop practical skills through play, exploration and supported risk-taking. Every child is different, so rather than expecting children to fit a programme, we meet each child where they are, follow their interests and support them to flourish at their own pace.
Where do sessions take place?
Our weekly Forest School sessions take place in an ancient woodland at Park Farm.

As the Wild Trout Foundation grows, we'll establish additional Forest School sites across Sussex.
Who is Forest School for?
Our sessions are open to primary-aged children (5–11 years).
Every child is welcomed with kindness, curiosity and respect.
When do sessions run?
Sessions run on Tuesday.
Additional sessions will be introduced as the programme grows.
How much does it cost?
£10.00 per hour per child. Session lengths vary. Contact us if you like to ask about sibling discounts.

What happens during a session?
No two sessions are ever the same.
Each session begins with time to arrive, reconnect and settle into the day. From there, the children, the seasons and the woodland shape what unfolds.
Children might:
· Build dens and shelters.
· Learn to use tools safely.
· Light fires and cook outdoors responsibly
· Create with natural materials.
· Discover wildlife and seasonal changes.
· Solve problems together.
· Tell stories, play games and make friends.
· Wander, wonder and simply enjoy being outside.
Some children spend twenty minutes watching a beetle. Others spend six weeks building the same den. Some return to the same tree every week.
All of it is learning.
Will my child learn?
Absolutely.
Learning happens everywhere at Forest School. Children solve problems, communicate, create, build confidence and develop practical skills through meaningful experiences in nature.
What if my child doesn't want to join in?
That's okay. Children are invited, never forced. Forest School is built on trust, relationships and choice. Sometimes the most important learning begins with simply feeling safe enough to watch.
What should my child wear?
Forest School takes place outdoors throughout the year. Children should wear clothes they don't mind getting muddy, along with suitable waterproofs, warm layers for colder days and cool long trousers and tops for hotter days. Sturdy footwear must be worn.
There is no such thing as bad weather—only unsuitable clothing. If outdoor clothing is a barrier, please speak to us in confidence. We'll always do our best to help.
How many adults are there?
Groups are small, with high levels of adult support. Ratios vary depending on the needs of the children and the activities taking place, ensuring every child feels safe, supported and known.
My child is neurodivergent. Will Forest School work for them?
Many neurodivergent children thrive outdoors.
Nature provides a rich, multi-sensory environment where children can move, explore and regulate in ways that are often difficult indoors.
We have experience supporting children with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, sensory processing differences and attachment needs, but above all, we see the child before the label.
