The case for what we do is well made. Across psychology, neuroscience, education, and public health, a growing body of evidence shows that time in nature — particularly regular, sustained, child-led time in nature — supports the whole child.
These are ten of the papers, articles, and reviews that inform our practice and underpin our approach. We have written each entry in plain language to make the evidence accessible. Where a paper is freely available, we have linked directly to it.

Beyond knowing nature: contact, emotion, compassion, meaning, and beauty are pathways to nature connection
Lumber, Richardson & Sheffield · PLOS ONE, 2017
The paper that established Richardson’s five pathways framework. Through two national surveys, the researchers found that what builds a genuine connection with nature is not knowledge or species identification — it is feeling. Emotional, sensory, and aesthetic engagement predicted nature connectedness where information alone did not. This has since informed the work of the Wildlife Trusts, the National Trust, and Natural England.
Wild Trout: This research sits at the centre of Wild Trout’s practice. Every session is designed to move children through the pathways — not to teach them about nature, but to help them feel part of it.
Nature connection | Health pathways
How might contact with nature promote human health? Promising mechanisms and a possible central pathway
Ming Kuo · Frontiers in Psychology, 2015
A landmark systematic review identifying 21 pathways by which contact with nature promotes health — from reduced stress hormones and improved immune function to lower ADHD symptoms and better sleep. Kuo proposes that enhanced immune functioning may be the central mechanism linking nature to health, and that the combined effect of multiple pathways operating together is substantial. This paper is the scientific basis for understanding why the woodland environment itself does much of the therapeutic work at Forest School.
Wild Trout: When we talk about the forest doing the regulating — when a child who arrived dysregulated slowly settles into themselves through the session — this is what the science says is happening. The environment is not just a backdrop. It is an active participant.
Mental health | Woodland
Valuing the mental health benefits of woodlands
Saraev, O’Brien, Valatin & Bursnell · Forest Research, 2021
A major UK government research report that synthesises evidence on the mental health benefits of woodland access — from reduced depression and anxiety to lower antidepressant prescription rates in greener areas. Reviews multiple pathways including forest bathing, physical exercise in woodland, and the simple presence of trees on urban streets. Makes the economic case for investing in woodland as a mental health intervention.
Wellbeing | Nature dose
Spending at least 120 minutes a week in nature is associated with good health and wellbeing
White et al. · Scientific Reports, 2019
A large-scale study of nearly 20,000 people in England found that people who spent at least two hours per week in nature reported significantly better health and wellbeing than those who spent none. The effect held across different ages, occupations, and levels of deprivation. Below two hours, the benefits were not reliably observed.
Wild Trout: This is why regular, repeated sessions matter. A one-off trip to the woods is valuable. But it is the weekly rhythm — the building of relationship over time — that creates lasting change. Forest School is not a visit. It is a belonging.

Forest school and its impacts on young children: case studies in Britain
O’Brien & Murray · Urban Forestry & Urban Greening, 2007
One of the foundational UK research papers on Forest School’s impact. Tracking 24 children across seven case study sites over eight months, the researchers identified six consistent positive themes: increased confidence and self-esteem; improved social skills and cooperation; better language and communication; greater motivation and concentration; improved physical and motor skills; and deepened knowledge of and respect for the natural world. Two further themes emerged around the ripple effect on parents and teachers.

Forest school | Mood | Development
Attending 12 weekly sessions of Forest School improves mood and cooperation in 7–8-year-old children
Blackwell et al. · Journal of Adventure Education and Outdoor Learning, 2024
A robust UK study of 179 primary school children found that those attending Forest School rated themselves as significantly less tired, less bored, calmer, and happier than those in classroom-based learning. They also showed measurable improvements in collaborative behaviour. A well-designed recent study adding strong evidence that sustained Forest School programmes — not one-off sessions — produce meaningful, measurable change.
Wild Trout: This is exactly what we see. The cumulative effect of regular sessions — the trust that builds, the confidence that grows, the regulation that slowly becomes possible — is not visible after one visit. It emerges over time.
Forest school | Systematic review
Reviewing two decades of research on the Forest School impact on children

A two-part systematic review drawing on 28 studies published between 2000 and 2019. Identifies seven consistent positive themes across the research: social and cooperative skills; physical skills; self-confidence and self-esteem; learning performance and cognitive skills; emotional and mental wellbeing; environmental awareness and sense of belonging; and risk management. The breadth and consistency of these findings across different countries, ages, and settings strengthens confidence in the evidence base considerably.

ADHD | Attention restoration
A potential natural treatment for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: evidence from a national study
Kuo & Faber Taylor · American Journal of Public Health, 2004
A national survey of parents of children with ADHD found that green outdoor settings consistently reduced ADHD symptoms — regardless of age, gender, diagnosis type, income level, or location. The greener the setting, the greater the symptom reduction. Indoor and built environments showed no comparable effect. The researchers concluded that “doses of nature” could be a safe, inexpensive, and widely accessible tool for managing ADHD symptoms. This finding has since been replicated across multiple countries and contexts.
Wild Trout: This research speaks directly to the children who come to Wild Trout. The woodland is not just a nice place to be. For children with attention and regulation difficulties, it is a genuinely therapeutic environment.
ADHD | Green space
Children with attention deficits concentrate better after a walk in the park
Faber Taylor & Kuo · Journal of Attention Disorders, 2009
In single-blind controlled trials, 17 children professionally diagnosed with ADHD each experienced three environments — a city park, a town centre, and a residential neighbourhood — via individually guided 20-minute walks. After the park walk, concentration was significantly and substantially higher than after either urban walk. The improvement was striking enough that the researchers described it as “shockingly better.” One of the clearest controlled demonstrations that green nature has a direct, measurable restorative effect on attention in children with ADHD.
CLIMATE, YOUNG PEOPLE & THE ROLE OF CONNECTION
Climate anxiety | Young people
Climate anxiety in children and young people and their beliefs about government responses to climate change: a global survey
Hickman et al. · The Lancet Planetary Health, 2021
A landmark international survey of 10,000 young people aged 16–25 across ten countries found that 59% were very or extremely worried about climate change, and 45% said their feelings about it affected their daily lives. Large numbers reported feelings of grief, betrayal, and fear for their futures. Young people in this study were not experiencing pathological anxiety — they were having rational responses to a real crisis. The paper calls for climate education that validates these feelings, builds agency, and supports psychological wellbeing alongside environmental literacy.
Wild Trout: Wild Trout’s programme does not look away from these feelings. Children who develop a relationship with the natural world — who feel themselves to be part of it — are better equipped to hold ecological grief without being overwhelmed. Connection is not the cause of the anxiety. It is part of the way through.

Natural Thinking: investigating the links between the natural environment, biodiversity and mental health

One of the most significant early UK reviews of the evidence linking nature, biodiversity, and mental health, commissioned by the RSPB and authored by Dr William Bird — GP, Strategic Health Advisor to Natural England, and founder of the Green Gym and Health Walks programmes. The report examines three theoretical frameworks — biophilia, stress recovery theory, and attention restoration theory — and applies them across the lifespan. Dedicated sections explore nature’s effects on children and teenagers specifically, including self-discipline, ADHD, emotional regulation, and the long-term importance of childhood nature experiences. A foundational document in the UK nature and health evidence base, and one referenced by Joe Harkness in Neurodivergent, By Nature.
Wild Trout: Bird described the countryside as “a great outpatient department whose therapeutic value is yet to be fully realised.” Almost twenty years on, Wild Trout is part of realising it.
